The 2009 American Institute For Public Service Jefferson Award

Since 1972, The Jefferson Awards, presented on two levels: national and local, serve as a "Call to Action for Volunteers" in local communities. For the past six years, the Times Union, St. Peter’s Health Care Services, News Channel 13 and the American Institute for Public Service, honored local ordinary people who, through volunteer service, do extraordinary things for other people, their community, their nation or the environment.
To Nominate A Volunteer

Submit nominations online or by mail. Only typewritten essays will be accepted. Your essay should include the following information:
- The Nominating Essay should complete the following sentence: “This individual is nominated for a 2009 Jefferson Award because...”
- How this nominee has impacted the community in 300 words or less.
- Years nominee has given their time and resources to help the community (Please include all the years the person has helped the community even if their nomination focuses on a specific project).
- Names and contact numbers for references who can verify or give additional information on the individual’s activities.
Should a nominee receive multiple nominations, only one nominating essay will be reviewed
by the judges.

Selection Process and Awards

A panel of judges will review the nominations and decisions will be made based on information submitted and verified. The selection process is multi-tiered. First, a group of finalists will be chosen from the general nomination pool, then a small number of individuals will be selected to receive Jefferson Award medallions. From this group, one individual will be chosen to represent the Capital Region during an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in June 2009. All finalists and medalists will be recognized during a local civic celebration in Spring 2009. |
